A friend of mine turned me on to this: feel like you are getting a cold? Gargle with warm salt water. It seems too simple to work, yet it does. The idea is not devoid of science. The cold virus does not like salt water. Salt water inhibits its capacity to breed. If it can't breed, it dies. Goodbye, cold.
To maximize the effectiveness of your application of warm salt water, you've got to get it to where the virus lives: the mucous membrane. It is relatively easy to get the salt water to the mucous membrane at the back of your throat. All you have to do is gargle. So... gargle! Twice a day, religiously, if you think you have the remotest hint that a cold is coming on. Nip it in the bud.
You also have lots of mucous membrane up your nose, in your nasal passages. To reduce nasal congestion, snort some warm salt water up your nose. Don't be squeamish! Don't you want to feel better? Get some salt water up there and loosen everything up. It may seem nasty and gross while you're doing it, but afterwards you feel great.
In addition to gargling (and perhaps snorting) warm salt water, get ten hours of sleep, take a multi-vitamin, and lay off the alcohol. You heard me! No alcohol. Alcohol weakens your immune system. When you are sleeping is when your body does most of its healing and virus-fighting. And vitamins help your body be strong, and it takes a strong body to fight off the cold virus.
While you are doing this regimen for your well being, visualize yourself healthy, feeling good. Visualization is also a powerful tool - I'll have to write a Hub about it!

Good info, I live in Florida and the salt water of the Ocean is also helpful for the skin. They sell expensive salt washes, but a quick dip is more helpful for dry skin, etc.
I have to tell you that really makes sense. As much as I hate water up my nose, especially salt water I guess I will just have to tough it out and do it next time I think I am getting sick.....very good advice!
I just snorted some, i have a headache, but I've had one for a month now. i'm originally from ca, i moved to texas (desert to forest) should i just move back home?
I have a few friends who do this. They say it works. Thanks for the info
Washing your mouth out with salt water is also better for your gums and teeth than using standard mouth wash which dries out the gums, due to the alcohol content. I have taken up the salt rinse to ward off colds too. But snorting it? I tried that once years ago and was not happy.
Good stuff!

Thanks for reminding me. I know it works for I have tried it in the past. Our Chinese servant used to scrap her tongue with a sort of metal (may be silver) strip every morning after brushing her teeth. She does not have colds either for she cleanses her tongue every day.
