Pros and Cons of Being a Writer

By Tom Rubenoff

So, bucko, you want to be a writer. Well, that might be good, or it might be not so good.

Pros

You can...

  • Inflict your opinion on the world
  • Create sexy characters and make them do anything you want
  • Fictionalize your enemies and have revenge upon them
  • Wax poetic in your prose
  • Wax prosaic in your poetry
  • Make your own rules
  • Break your own rules
  • Create your own grammar
  • Use inventive spelling
  • Parodize those you despise
  • Glorify those you admire
  • Spend hours and hours in a world of your own creation
  • Change the world
  • Affect public opinion
  • Become rich and famous
  • Sell your work to a movie producer
  • See your work in print in newspapers and magazines
  • Say that you are a Writer and impress your friends

Cons

  • Rejection. Be prepared for lots of rejection.
  • No one cares about your opinion
  • Your sexy characters become strong and refuse to do what you say. Pretty soon they are telling you what to write. He wants to be a corporate lawyer for Disney and she wants to be a librarian. They want to have a family and move to Worcester...
  • Your enemies may read your revenge upon them in your fiction and take revenge upon you in your reality
  • People will laugh at your poetic prose
  • People will snore at your prosaic poetry
  • People may say you are a bad writer if you make your own rules
  • People will say you are a worse writer if you break your own rules
  • People will think you are ignorant if you use your own grammar and/or inventive spelling
  • If you write a parody about someone you despise, you may actually help them by getting them publicity
  • If you glorify someone you admire, readers may think it is a parody
  • If you spend hours and hours in your own little world, you will miss hours and hours out of your real life
  • Your writing might change the world for the worse
  • You may affect public opinion in ways you did not intend
  • People who are already rich and famous for doing other things are competing with you. Why should anybody make you rich and famous when they can publish somebody who already is?
  • About a million screenplays are written every year and about two dozen get picked up
  • If your writing is published in a newspaper or magazine, people may express a contrary opinion by sending you hate mail or perhaps a bomb
  • When you say that you are a writer, the first question will be, "Where have you been published?"

Writing is a disease. Unless you check it in its early stages, it gets a hold of you like a pit bull and just won't let go. The good news? It's pretty fun.

Happy writing.

How true. It does take hold of you and kind of consume you. Another con for me would be when I really want to write something and I can't think of anything interesting to say. I get that a lot. Great Hub Tom.

lol. I love writing because of the cons... it's such a challenge. Well, except for the whole bombing thing.

I agree totally. I love it when my characters take over the story, not to mention my life, ha ha

Really funny hub. A totally different take on the pros and cons of being a writer. Yet, it is true.

I chuckled when I read the pros, I laughed when I read the cons. You make writing seem really enjoyable, Tom.

Glad you enjoyed, SiddSingh! Writing is enjoyable in a sick kind of way.

Tom, you seem to make it a habit to make me smile! :-) The list of PROS is good, but the list of CONS is fantastic! Laugh!

I love that. Thanks, Elena!

Yes, that's why I always say, "I'm a locksmith." That shuts 'em up.

I tell 'em the truth, that I'm a business exec in a multinational corporation --that not only shuts everyone up, but sends them running in the other direction! Laugh!

LOL Tom, this is really good and I enjoyed both the pros and cons. Another sad con is that a writer often isn't recognized for their work (if it's good) until they are dead. lol!

Okay, so that's not the total truth, but after reading this, I was thinking about an antique book I have that is a literary criticism in the days of Dickens and other great writers who are today adored. They kind of got some snooty reviews in their time. ;) I'll have to dig out that book to refresh my memory about what was said. lol!

That would be cool to see that book, Pam.

A great thing about being a writer - if it's not true, it's not a lie: it's fiction!!

Your hubs always make me laugh Tom (apart from the ones about hinges. Oh, OK I confess. I haven't read the ones about hinges!) I like the line about characters developing a life of their own, and then not letting you tell them what to do. I have the same problem!

My characters always change my stories. It's like having kids without the expense! Thanks so much, Amanda

(I am SO proud of my hinge drawings LOL)

Hilarious! And it's all true which makes the laugh all the more enjoyable. ... and as a writer you can break all of "their" rules... which is more fun than revenge...

Thanks for the post-lunch grin, what a guy!

Blogging this to my poetry blog where I promote more than myself (that can be such a snooze) - they will definitely enjoy this one!

great list. I tend to have more of the cons working against me than pros working for me (see how I am creating my own grammar but than appearing ignorant instead).

Tom Rubenoff profile image

Tom Rubenoff Hub Author 3 years ago

Benson, ignorance is not knowing you are creating your own grammar, and the cons are for everyone, not just you! I'm going to go visit a bunch of your hubs now and give them the thumbs up to cheer you up.

You're lucky, Tom, if your friends are impressed that you are a writer...mine would rather I was a gourmet chef or something! :P

People seem to have a good opinion of me on HubPages, and I value that greatly, but elsewhere I am just regarded as another hardware sales weasel. Sigh.
