Don’t Call Me Marion Yet

Updated on April 26, 2012

So life like sometimes you know
When the puppet show is on
But today there is strange tension
On the strings

My suddenly awkward conversations
As I am jerked upward a few inches
Or my excuse for reasoning suddenly
Collapsing in a heap of rag doll limbs

Not bothering with footsteps
I seem to glide out the door
Dragging my toes and pride behind me
Wishing I could go back for my decorum

Somehow I manage
To get back to the car
Without spilling too much
Hot coffee on my thumb

Driving is surreal
Somehow not quite in control
The wheel feels too light
Moving strangely in my grip

I stop beside the reservoir
See the blossoms reflected
On the surface of the still water
And breathe deep the chill spring air

And breathe again
And the world is no longer
A Pinocchio stage
But instead a beautiful place to live

After a moment I walk with sure steps
Back toward the waiting car and day
Leaving on the ground behind me my strings
No puppet show today

Poem 23 of 30 for NaPoWriMo

Sometimes the physical existence feels unnatural. Since all reality occurs on the electromagnetic spectrum, perhaps these occasional disruptions of complete engagement are caused by solar activity or changes in Earth’s polarity.

Have you ever had a dentist or doctor working on you when they get a telephone call they simply must take? They have one hand in your mouth or whatever and one hand answering the phone. Maybe the Eternal is like that. She gets distracted with one of her other creations and is only half paying attention as she animates you.

Or maybe the Hand of God is actually made out of the same energy as everything else, and so is subject to interference, like a cheap AM radio. Nah, probably not, eh, bucko?

Well, wait a minute. Many major religions have the idea that something about the mortal human being separates them from the Divine; maybe it is sin, maybe it is disobedience or inherent unworthiness. That would mean that our actions, inaction or characteristics might affect our connection with the Eternal. Perhaps this idea is founded on the feeling of disconnectedness I touch on in my poem.

Personally I think one of the most prevalent contributing factors affecting connection to Spirit is lack of sleep. I believe our dreams are the Spirit within us communicating with us. When you don’t get enough sleep, you deprive yourself of that deep REM sleep that is so necessary to dreaming.

I think I’ll go to bed early tonight. How about you, Internet wanderer?
